While using leather ballet shoes may have its advantages on wood floors, does that really make them a better option than canvas?

With all of the myths out there about which type of shoe is better (leather or canvas), we set out to find the answer for you.

So what do you think? are you ready to find out if canvas ballet shoes are better than leather ballet shoes?

Let’s start with the research.

Canvas Ballet Shoes vs Leather Ballet Shoes

Leather ballet shoes tend to be recommended for younger dancers. They certainly are more durable and tougher to break in. However,
during my research, I found that leather shoes are more dated and fewer, and fewer schools are requiring students to wear them.

Most of the instructors we spoke to said that there were several problems with leather shoes. They take more time to stretch and conform to the shape of your foot. Leather shoes also require you to take more care in selecting the correct fit because they need to be right in order to stretch properly. Another major problem for regular dancers is that they’re an absolute pain to clean.

Are canvas ballet shoes better than leather ballet shoes?

The answer is YES. Lots of blogs try to talk about both as if they’re good options, but it’s really no competition.

Canvas ballet shoes are MUCH better. Here are a few reasons why canvas shoes are better than leather ballet shoes:

  • They immediately fit your feet better.
  • Canvas shoes stretch to accommodate your foot shape.
  • The suede on the bottom of canvas shoes provides better traction.
  • They’re easier to clean.
  • They breathe, which reduces fungus and germs (and smell better!)
  • Canvas shoes have greater sensitivity making it easier to feel the floor as you dance.
  • Canvas shoes are cheaper and easier to replace.

This isn’t just my opinion either. We polled over 10,000 dancers asking them what kind of canvas shoe they preferred. A whopping 98% said that they preferred canvas ballet shoes to leather.

So there you have it. If you don’t believe me, trust the other 98% of dancers who prefer using canvas shoes.
