En Haut is a term in ballet that refers to a position being done in a high position. You’ll typically here En Haut used with fifth position. For example, “Fifth en Haut."
En haut means “high” and describes a position held in a high placement, most often the arms. You will usually hear it paired with a numbered position, as in “fifth en haut,” which means the arms are rounded and lifted above the head. Adding en haut to a position tells the dancer to take it in the raised, overhead placement rather than a lower one. It helps teachers point out exactly where the arms should be during a step or pose.
