The Colburn School (Dance Academy & Trudl Zipper Dance Institute)
The Colburn School sits right in the heart of downtown LA, and its dance side runs on two tracks. The Trudl Zipper Dance Institute handles everything from community classes up through serious pre-professional work, while the tuition-free Colburn Dance Academy trains a small group of elite students. It is a performing arts powerhouse with music and dance under one roof, which is a pretty rare setup.
USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance
USC Kaufman is one of the newer names on this list, and it came in with real ambition. The school welcomed its first class in 2015 and built its BFA around a hybrid philosophy it calls The New Movement, which blends classical ballet with contemporary and other styles. If you want a conservatory-level dance education inside a big research university, this is the pitch.
